The term NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Buildings) is used to categorise buildings with an extremely high energy efficiency where the nearly zero or minimal amount of energy that they do require is largely generated from renewable sources.
When planning permission is being sought for new property development, local authorities will request a Part L Compliance Report. Similar to BER (Building Energy Rating), the Part L report indicates a building’s ability to continue to comply with current regulations post-construction.
The criteria of the term NZEB outlined above are now required to be met under the latest edition of Part L compliance.
Our sustainability team undertakes Part L Compliance Reports for residential and commercial clients. The reports analyse energy, carbon, and renewable energy requirements and provide optimum building solutions for our clients to ensure compliance.
We analyse the building form, orientation, window sizing, and design using the fabric first approach that consists of passive energy, natural ventilation strategies, window sizing and glazing selection, and U value specifications in order to reduce energy use while improving comfort and triggering compliance.
Lawler Sustainability, together with our sister company Lawler Consulting, was selected as M&E Design Consultants for the development of Ireland’s largest waterpark, Center Parcs in Longford.
This involved ensuring that all of our client’s energy requirements, including overheating analysis and computational fluid dynamics, were met.
By carefully selecting M&E equipment and building fabric, and through the continuous assessment of the Building Energy Ratings (BER), we were able to ensure full Part L Compliance at handover.
Center Parcs in Longford is Ireland’s largest waterpark which includes 466 luxury lodges and 30 stylish apartments. As the M&E design consultants, we undertook many energy services to ensure we met our client’s energy requirements.
Lawler Sustainability carried out an in-store energy assessment. The energy assessment identified potential annual savings which represent a 38% reduction in electricity costs. Particularly impressive was the range of saving opportunities identified and the annual savings identified in the tariff structures alone meant that survey costs were more than covered by the savings identified.
