In November 2022, DLR Leisure began its energy transformation on its leisure centres across its 3 sites in Loughlinstown, Meadowbrook and Monkstown.
DLR Leisure’s Energy and Carbon Savings
Lawler Sustainability carried out energy upgrade works to DLR Leisure’s three leisure centres: Loughlinstown Leisure Centre; Meadowbrook Leisure Centre; and Monkstown Leisure Centre. Each of the leisure centres comprised of swimming pools, café, gym and football pitch facilities.
Drivers and Energy Saving Measures
The drivers for this project were to reduce energy consumption and meet carbon reduction goals across all three sites. Lawler Sustainability employed a number of energy saving measures and upgrades to achieve the desired energy cost savings, firstly by installing electricity and gas meters. The aim here was to provide detailed and reliable data that supports the implementation of energy-saving measures, ensures accountability, and tracks performance improvements. This involves installing advanced metering systems to monitor energy consumption in real time, ensuring transparency, and facilitating effective energy management. This project alone was able to achieve an additional 6.2% energy savings resulting in same reduction in carbon.
An energy performance contract is then agreed between the parties, the customer – DLR Leisure and Lawler Sustainability – the Energy Service Company (ESCo), to deliver guaranteed energy savings within the buildings and in turn, these savings help to cover the cost of carrying out the works.
Following just one year after Lawler Sustainability completed these upgrades, DLR Leisure were able to boast annual energy savings of 30% across their buildings. They also saved €269,000 in energy costs and a further €72,000 in maintenance costs.
