Lawler Sustainability performed an energy audit and M&E assessment at the Virgin Media data centre in Dublin to identify routes for improving the centre’s energy efficiency.
Energy Audit
As part of our contract for Virgin Media at its Dublin-based data centre, we performed a data centre energy audit and M&E assessment to address ongoing, high energy costs of running the facility.
Our expert team of engineers was able to quickly identify an array of significant energy users (SEU) on the site before calculating existing and new power usage effectiveness (PUE) for the site equipment.
This detailed energy audit and consumption analysis of the onsite equipment such as CRAC units allowed us to identify a multitude of areas where energy efficiency could be improved.
Energy Saving Opportunities
Up to a 40% reduction in energy consumption was identified in the energy audit.
This is made possible by the implementation of the following recommend measures.
- Installing Solar PV
- Introducing an air flow management system
- Optimising the percentage of free cooling and mixed-mode for the CRAC units
- Assessing the design of the CRAC unit layout to highlight areas of poor resilience
- Identifying cooling issues with the UPS and the potential for system failures
Following the success of this project, Lawler Sustainability will be engaging with Virgin Media to look at other potential sites for energy reduction opportunities.
