About NOVICE
The NOVICE project was an EU-funded Horizon 2020 initiative that pioneered a novel business model for Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) by combining energy efficiency with demand response services. Coordinated by the International Energy Research Centre (IERC), it spanned three years until around 2020, supported by grant No 745594. The model leverages Enhanced Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs) to ensure energy savings, comfort levels, and revenue from grid flexibility services.
Lawler Sustainability’s Key Role
Lawler Sustainability contributed significantly to NOVICE, drawing on its expertise as one of Ireland’s foremost sustainability consultancies in EU-funded projects. Our involvement advanced energy optimisation efforts, aligning with our strengths in sustainable design and carbon reduction. This participation highlights our proficiency in EPCs and renewable energy solutions.
Pilot Demonstrations and Outcomes
NOVICE demonstrated the model at two Irish sites: a leisure centre in Dublin and a supermarket in Kilkenny. In Dublin, simulations revealed 45 kW flexibility potential with negligible impact on thermal comfort. At the supermarket, efficiency upgrades reduced energy consumption by 36%, shortening payback from 11.8 to 9.9 years through demand response and battery storage integration.
Enduring Impact Across Europe
The project enhanced renovation rates by strengthening EPC viability via ESCO-aggregator collaborations. Comprehensive results are documented on the project website, fostering holistic energy services throughout Europe. NOVICE laid essential groundwork for subsequent initiatives like EasyPro.
